HS The Questione della lingua: Nation building and translation in Italy
Long before the emergence of an Italian nation state, the question of the Italian national language was a central debate on self-understanding that lasted several centuries. The question of which language to write in and how to write in which language is also closely linked to the problem of translation from the very beginning. Not without reason a central insight of recent translation studies is that nation-building processes are (almost) always the product of translation processes.
The seminar will explore this aspect on the basis of text examples from several centuries, using Italy as an example.
