While most classes on Shakespeare will either give an overview of his work in a particular genre or focus on a single one of his plays, this class proposes a narrow focus on the Bard's plays - histories, comedies and tragedies - written and performed in a closely defined period of time. For such an undertaking, 1599 would appear an eminently fruitful subject of enquiry as it sees several pivotal events in Shakespeare's career, from the death of the nation's greatest poet, Edmund Spenser, to the opening of the Globe.
While the present selection of plays may thus lend itself particularly well to historicist/biographical readings, our focus will be on aspects of form and genre, on the strategies texts employ to pose questions and communicate ideas. Both presentations and seminar papers will need to reflect this.
-Circumstances permitting, this class will be taught as a face-to-face seminar-
