In this class, you are going to get to know the basics of studying literature in English: we will cover major approaches, critical concepts, and theoretical methods for the analysis of literature. At the same time, we will explore some of the major epochs of literature in the English language, starting in Early Modern times and working our way up to the present day. We will also consider the three major literary genres: poetry, drama, and the novel.

Your instructor will provide most of the primary sources in digital format. However, there are two books you should buy:
Shelley, Mary. Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. Please make sure that you buy the Norton Critical Edition of this text.
Shakespeare, William. King Lear. Please buy the Arden edition.
