In this seminar, we will take a close look at English grammar, contrasting authentic native speaker data (spoken and written) with English grammar as it is portrayed in schoolbooks. We will cover topics like comparatives and superlatives, the use of the present perfect vs. simple past, the subjunctive, etc. The aim is to experience the variation there is in English grammar and to rethink the notion of grammatical "correctness", which is particularly important for prospective teachers of English as a foreign language.
Since the grammar of spoken language is quite different from the grammar of written English, we will dedicate quite a few sessions to detecting and exploring the particularities of spoken English. Relevant questions are, for instance: How "defective" is spoken English? Which principles govern the production of speech? What can the grammar of spoken English tell us about language processing?
