American culture has been marked by recurring periods of religious awakenings characterized by Evangelical fervor and calls for (individual and social) reformation. The seminar will discuss the various historical contexts and will venture into the fields of religious psychology and the sociology of religion. Its main focus will be on specific documents in order to ascertain by which means religious fervor was generated and how they expressed religious experience. Texts will include works by Jonothan Edwards and George Whitefield, Charles Finey and examples of recent fundamentalism and Tele-Evangelism.
