Intensifiers are used to add force to (or to mitigate) a proposition, e.g. This book is very (weakened: mildly) interesting. In this seminar, we will investigate variation in the intensifier system in English (speaker-related variables like age and gender but also differences across varieties, differences in the collocational patterns and in the degree of lexicalisation), using corpora of various kinds as a database to tackle a variety of research questions (for instance, how do speaker age and gender affect the use of intensifiers? How do British and American English differ in their use of intensifiers?). We will explore the usual suspects very, really and so, but also consider new-ish arrivals on the field like well, dead and uber, etc. Studies on intensification typically centre around adjective amplification (this is very good), but we will also investigate noun phrase (this is so nineties) and verb intensification (I totally get you).
