This course provides an in-depth look at the Middle English language period which lasted from 1100 to 1500. It is in this time that the English language changed drastically, i.e. from a language that shares a lot of similarities to Present-day German to a language that is a heterogeneous mix of Germanic and Romance elements. We will zoom in on all levels of linguistic analysis (spelling, phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicology) by considering medieval texts from that period, most notably Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
