This course is intended for Bachelor students in Meteorology and is part of the module: “Met-ThW Atmosphärische Thermodynamik und Wolken”. The course will be partially held in English. The first lecture is on Monday, October 25.

Contents:
The goal of the course is to provide an overview of basic concepts in cloud physics, starting from cloud formation processes, via particle formation and growth processes, up to dissipation processes like evaporation and melting.

1) INTRODUCTION

• Earth’s radiation budget; cloud classification; cloud particles; saturation;

liquid and ice phase; cloud formation processes; thermodynamics

2) MICROSTRUCTURE OF CLOUDS

• Size distributions; formation and role of particles in clouds; aerosol particles, cloud droplets, ice crystals, graupel, and hail

3) PHASE TRANSITION IN CLOUDS

• Homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation; classic theories, Raoult effect, Kelvin effect; Wegener-Bereron-Findeisen effect, etc.; cloud condensing particles

4) GROWTH PROCESSES I – Liquid phase

• Köhler equation; diffusional growth; collision and coalescence; drop breakup

5) GROWTH PROCESSES I I – Ice phase

• Nucleation; diffusional growth; collisional growth (riming); melting
