This is an introductory course to writing short stories, poetry, and creative nonfiction. The first three fourths of the semester will be dedicated to examining techniques and strategies employed in the aforementioned genres through the study of published works, the use of in-class exercises, and the production of student works in each genre. The final quarter of the course will be an introduction to the conventions of the creative writing workshop in which students submit original work for critique and produce critiques of peer work. Individual stories, poems, essays, and critiques submitted throughout the semester will provide the basis for a final portfolio of work submitted at the semester’s end.
