This seminar focuses on life writing as an open term encompassing various aspects and genres. On the one hand, we will examine the tradition of (auto)biographical writing and its critical reception. This includes discussing the blurring of lines that is epitomized by the term autofiction to describe the writing style of merging real and invented or desired elements. Researching this background, we can thus establish certain parallels between life writing, fiction, and even science-fiction stories.
On the other hand, there will be a strong emphasis on practical life writing assignments. Studying at FTSK means becoming qualified to work in fields such as translating, public relations, or journalism. The seminar is meant to support developing and strengthening communication and writing skills as well as research, text analysis, and presentation skills. The assignments are designed as case studies so the knowledge and skills can later be applied in practical situations IRL.
