In the seminar, we will use short stories and novel excerpts to learn about various Afro-Brazilian and Luso-African women writers and their themes, such as coming to terms with colonialism and tradition, exclusion in modern society, migration, and relationships and designs for diferent social relations. Prior to the sessions on individual authors, we will spend the first few weeks looking more closely at issues of 'structural racism' and the psychological, physical, and emotional impact for black women in Brazil, as well as the aspects of orality and oral history that are central to African-centered cultures. We are very pleased that the Brazilian philosopher and activist against structural racism towards Black women, Djamila Ribeiro, will give her plenary lecture in our seminar as part of her ZIS Fellowship at JGU. The exact date will be communicated as soon as possible, and the seminar program as well as the texts and excerpts will be made available on ILIAS soon.
Seminar credit will be earned through active participation, a presentation, and a seminar paper, which may be submitted untill 3/31/2022.
