This practical class is designed for students with Chinese as their native language who have been admitted to the master's program.
This exercise aims to sensitise the students to the problems and pitfalls of machine translation, which can now be found everywhere. The course also provides them with approaches to solving these problems and arguments for their own translation work. Additionally the course focuses on the ability to express onself in German.
The output of translation engines will be discussed and and assessed, using press texts on economical topics chosen by the group (with the agreement of the lecturer). Using examples, typical weaknesses of translation engines will be dealt with .
For this purpose, the students first create their own translation of the text in question without using translation engines. On the basis of their own translations (gold standard of human translation), the results of customarily used engines (i.e. Google, DeepL) are then discussed and evaluated.

Additional information:
Whether participants have to take an exam or whether respectively what kind of paper they have to write depends on which part of the module the course represents. This will be clarified at the beginning of the semester.
