A translation-sensitive approach to texts lies at the core of the translating occupation. Now this is easily transferable to texts that are to be translated. But what about texts that address translation at different times and thus bring the translation profession and translation as a whole into a historical perspective?
If the past itself is not accessible, but can only be (re)constructed on the basis of (written) artifacts that can be regarded as sources, then a source-critical approach to such artifacts can provide important insights for translation history. What exactly can these textual testimonies tell us about this profession and about translation as a whole, its historical development and social position? What conceptualizations of translation underlie them?
We read German texts on translation from different historical and social contexts (prefaces, reviews, scholars' treatises, obituaries, acceptance speeches, official files such as printing approval procedures) and try to examine them as historical sources.
