In this course we will take a look at the rules governing word formation in the English language. Compare, for instance, the following expressions: unavailable, unease, unfold with *unplay, *unlost, *ungame. Is meaning discerned just by morphology? What are the roles and constraints of phonology, semantics and syntax within this process? Why are certain word-formation elements sensitive to specific categories, whereas others are not? We will address these issues in order to provide a better understanding of this topic and gain insights on the particular characteristics of English word-formation.
