The British patristic scholar Henry Chadwick once identified charity and humanity practiced in Christian communities as the key to the success of Christianity in antiquity. The Christian Fathers were indeed well aware of the importance of ethics, and they attempted more or less explicitly to penetrate theologically and intellectually the consequences of the biblical message for human coexistence. The aim of this lecture is to discuss the origins of ancient Christian ethical concepts by looking at the non-Christian environment and philosophical traditions on the one hand, and at the development of a Christian community ethos within a particular socio-historical context on the other.
