Requirements / organisational issues:
Students should have a good command of English and be willing to contribute to seminar discussions. The course will utilise the knowledge and skills gained in Introductions to Literary Studies and any existing knowledge of Britain in the 17th century. Students should not be afraid of complex poetic texts.
Contents:
Metaphysical Poetry from the 17th century marks the transition from traditional poetry to modern experiment. It comes from a time of conflict and development: the English Civil War, the aftermath of the Reformation and the emerging Enlightenment as well as Britain's Empire. The poetry produced in this time reflects all of this and is (often in combination) violent, erotic, religious and political.
The course will cover central figures of this poetic trend, such as John Donne, Andrew Marvell, and George Herbert, but also related figures such as the so-called "Cavalier Poets" and the women poets Anne Bradstreet and Katherine Philips.
Recommended reading list:
It is recommended that students buy the following annotated scholarly edition:
Colin Burrow, ed. (2006): Metaphysical Poetry. Penguin Classics. London et al.: Penguin. Print.
Digital teaching:
I am planning to conduct this seminar live with material available online. Should pandemic restrictions apply it will move to BigBlueButton.
