E.A. Poe is widely known to be the writer of gothic stories and poems, which have gained fame and become household names. Many also know that he is one of the most prominent theorists of the short story genre, and some even believe that he might actually have been the first theorist to use the term "short story." Apart from this, however, he is also credited for being the father of the modern detective story genre, which heavily relies on the art of deduction. Arguably, fewer readers are aware that Poe also wrote satirical stories, which make reference to political events at his time. In this course, we will discuss a wide range of stories to demonstrate that Poe was a truly versatile writer.
Stories discussed:
"The Tell-Tale Heart"
"The Fall of the House of Usher"
"The Pit and the Pendulum"
"The Masque of the Red Death"
"The Gold Bug"
"The Murders in the Rue Morgue"
"The Purloined Letter"
"The Mystery of Marie Roget"
"THe Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar"
"The Thousand-and Second Tale of Sheherazade"
"The Man That Was Used Up"
