The 19th century was an age of rapid technological advancements but also new knowledge in the fields of science, psychology and medicine. American authors responded to these developments in various literary forms, such as the gothic mode (Hawthorne, Poe) or satire (Twain).
Some American women writers created a new image of the woman doctor in their realist writing, which deviated from the traditional image of the woman doctor who is reduced to an abortionist. (Jewett, Phelps)
In the course we will read short stories and novels that address the advancements in science, technology and medicine. The reading includes:
Nathaniel Hawthorne," The Birthmark"
Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Dr. Heideggers Experiment"
Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Rappaccini's Daughter"
Edgar A. Poe, "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar"
Edgar A. Poe, "Von Kempelen and His Disvovery"
Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
Sarah Orne Jewett, A Country Doctor
Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Doctor Zay
