Course offering details

Instructors: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Lauer

Event type: Seminar

Displayed in timetable as: Asthetics

Hours per week: 2

Language of instruction: German

Min. | Max. participants: - | 30

Registration group: Ästhetische Aspekte

Requirements / organisational issues:
The main of the seminar is to teach the basics of typography and book design in a historical and systematic perspective, not only using printed copies themselves, but also including the contexts in which books are used. The students learn to understand these historical and systematic contexts and gain professionally useful knowledge on how they can draw attention to books through aesthetic aspects, especially in the digital age.

Contents:
In the digital society, everything is changing, including the role of books. The seminar examines, analyses and discusses the changing function and role of books in connection with their design, using selected examples. The term 'book' is used to describe a broad spectrum of written media, their typography, illustrations, covers and contexts in which books gain attention. Avant-gardes and artists' books are as much a topic of the seminar as popular books and bestsellers, children's books or self-designed books in social media such as Bookstagram or Booktube.
