The romantic image of the Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site is largely determined by its medieval castles, which can be found there in a high spatial density. Built as defensive structures on a natural traffic route that was important for power politics, the castles experienced a renaissance in the 19th century as country manors before they were partly converted into hotels or museums and finally became UNESCO world heritage sites in the 20th century. In the exercise, typical elements of castle construction are conveyed, the political iconology of the castles is dealt with, the history of use up to the present is presented and questions of monument preservation are discussed.
