Requirements / organisational issues:
No previous knowledge in the field of AD is required to register for this exercise. The audio-visual material will be screened and discussed in class. It will then be made available via MS Teams together with the weekly PPT presentations (see also recommended literature).
It is recommended that the students use the free software DaVinci Resolve (https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/de/products/davinciresolve/) to create their audio descriptions; a short introduction to the software will take place before the start of the practical part. Alternatively, other video editing software may also be used (e.g., the integrated Video Editor in Windows 10).
Contents:
This semester we look at audio description (AD) from a cross-linguistic perspective. After a brief theoretical introduction to the history and technical aspects of audio description, students will get an overview of the current AD guidelines in Germany, Spain, France, and the UK.
During the practical part of the exercise, students will have the opportunity to create their own audio descriptions using previously selected audio-visual material both in German and in the individual foreign languages (depending on their language combination). In this way, the linguistic, culture-specific and technical challenges of creating AD will be illustrated and discussed together. At the same time, students will reflect on the differences and similarities regarding the perception and implementation of AD in the individual countries/languages, as well as regarding current developments on a European level (e.g., advantages and disadvantages of a uniform European AD directive).
