Contents:
Ralph Waldo Emerson stated that "the only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be." In this seminar, we will examine the ideas of darkness, destiny, and the guiding light of literature. We will start out by looking at the historical and cultural context of some of these ideas which will then serve as a lens to look at some literary examples that have shaped the collective identity of Americans. We will also discuss the requirements of academic writing and work on some practical assignments, e.g. an exposé of the seminar paper.
