American ideology may be framed in two ways (which complement each other), one that can be traced back to John Locke and the concept of self-interest (egotism), the other to the Scottish moral-sense school and its ideas of benevolence and human sympathy (altruism) generating personal and social happiness. Throughout American history, this sentimental disposition has been a motivating force in various political and social reforms, such as abolitionism, women´s emancipation, charity and social equity movements as well as civil rights advocacy.
