Requirements / organisational issues:
The seminar is aimed at theology students in their main studies. Active participation includes the presentation of a short paper (approx. 10-15 min.). The examination in M.Ed. for module 9 (30 min. presentation) can be covered by taking two short presentations. All other examinations (e.g. seminar papers) can also be taken in conjunction with the seminar.
Forms of work:
The seminar is offered jointly with colleagues from North America or from American Studies in Mainz. If the Corona situation permits, Prof. Dr. Craig Atwood from Moravian Seminary (Belthlehem/Pennsylvania) and Prof. Dr. Manfred Siebald (American Studies, Mainz) will organize the seminar together with Prof. Dr. W. Breul.
Contents:
In the last two decades, interdisciplinary research has recognized the special role of the Moravian Church in the church history of the 18th and early 19th centuries as a factor of religious and cultural innovation. This includes in particular an innovative concept of church, which also meant the renunciation of an own confessional identity, a redefinition of gender relations, an understanding of mission that accepted the cultural and social identity of its addressees to a considerable degree for the 18th century, and a number of new religious practices and forms of worship.
Students may choose a significant portion of the topics in the seminar. Suggested topics include:
- Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf - biography and theology.
- The founding and development of the "Brüdergemeine"
- The heyday of the Brüdergemeine on the "Herrnhaag" near Büdingen
- The Moravians in Scandinavia
- The Moravians in North America
- Marriage, sexuality and gender relations
- Zinzendorf's view of Judaism
- The interdenominational concept in mission and diaspora work
- Dorothea Erdmuthe von Zinzendorf
- Anna Nitschmann, Zinzendorf's second wife

Additional information:
Possible excursion: The "Herrnhaag" near Büdingen, north of Frankfurt, was the center of the Moravian Church during its heyday (1740-1750). This so-called "Sichtungszeit" is the subject of current research (P. Peucker). A Christian community lives there today. On request we can organize an excursion to the Herrnhaag.
Digital teaching:
The seminar should - if the pandemic situation and the university regulations allow it - take place in attendance.
