Topics are assigned in the first session. Those who are not present will be assigned a topic by the lecturer.
Contents:
It is frequently said that translators need to have a special mastery of their mother tongue and that students in this field need to give special care and attention to their mother tongue competence. In this class, the competence in the target language, German, and the creation of practice material to strengthen this competence are the main focus. The students will analyse typical mistakes in German in small groups, explain them to their fellow students and autonomously design exercises that will help them avoid these mistakes in the future. The final goal is the collaborative compilation of a "German as a target language" exercise book resulting from this process.
In the course of the semester, the participants will be sensibilised to basic difficulties and frequent mistakes in German and develop an awareness of their own individual difficulties.
Topics will include: correct formation and use of conjunctives; compound and hyphenated spelling; explicitness of references in relative clauses and participial constructions; formation of participles (in standard German!); dealing with historically "burdened" words; fixed and less fixed noun-verb collocations; distinction of stylistic registers; use of gender-appropriate language; comma placement; etc. All these topics arise from frequently observed errors in translation classes, are however independent of the language pair and are therefore dealt with in this class with a sole focus on German as a target language.
