In this seminar you will be studying a selection of novels which have been described as Bildungsromane (or “Novels of Development”). However, since that genre definition is contested, the goal of this course is not only for you to get to know the novels in question, but also to understand different scholarly perspectives on the genre.
Recommended reading list:
The course will be based on the following novels, which must be read by all students, ideally before the beginning of the semester (two of them are quite substantial, so start early!). Please obtain good, critical editions of these texts (i.e. Oxford World’s Classics, Penguin Classics, Penguin Modern Classics) and give dodgy print-on-demand versions a wide berth.
Fanny Burney, Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World (1778)
George Eliot, The Mill on the Floss (1860)
John McGahern, The Dark (1965)
Additional reading materials (both primary and secondary sources) will be made available closer to the start of the semester and successively during it via Moodle.
Additional information:
A detailled seminar programme specifying course content and requirements will be uploaded in Moodle in April.
