Contents:
This lecture aims at providing students with a solid understanding of key elements in cultural theory. It covers the relations of culture and power as conceptualized by Gramsci and Foucault and other philosophers. The course will relate theoretical terms to past and current media phenomena, institutions, and practices. The learning object is for students to develop an understanding of theoretical approaches in cultural studies.

The interactive online format of the lecture will familiarise students with the basic theories of cultural studies. It will define the field and the meanings of culture first and then discuss theories connected with power, ideology, and identity - including those of gender, sexuality, race, and class.

Students will be asked to read one key text (usually an essay or an extract from a longer work) for each session.
