Joyce Carol Oates
Oates is one of the most productive authors of contemporary American literature. She has tried her hand at various genres, published literary and cultural citicism, and taught as a university professor. She is credited with reviving the romance tradition and moved from realism to magic realism. Her depiction of violence and of "evil" women has been controversial.
The seminar will focus on her novel Mudwoman (2012) after discussing her short fiction "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" (1974). We will consider her Young Adult fiction (e.g. Big Mouth & Ugly Girl, 2002).
Students who are in the process of writing the B.A. thesis are advised not to register for this seminar.
If possible the seminar will require classroom presence.
