Contents:
The seminar focuses on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, its regional and international setting. It explores root causes, impacts, dynamics, and conflict management attempts. The violent conflict between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian military escalated on 24 February 2022 and turned Ukraine into a warzone. It is an aim of the seminar to understand the road to the Russian invasion better based on a critical assessment of political developments in the last two decades. After engaging with concepts of conflict analysis, we investigate the main characteristics of the conflict (and the multiple conflicts entangled), such as the conflict parties, conflict dynamics, as well as local, national, and international actors, their perspectives, positions, and policies. Afterwards, we focus on conflict management and transformation opportunities such as negotiations and mediation.A specific feature of this seminar is the explicit engagement with local perspectives and critical approaches towards the conflict. The seminar is a cross-site project between five German universities. It thus involves an innovative teaching format based on cross-site teaching with approx. 170 students and five lecturers who engage with each other in a digital setting. In addition, input is provided by a wide range of experts from several universities and think tanks, including local perspectives.

Recommended reading list:
Literature will be announced in the first session.

Additional information:
The seminar is strongly based on e-learning-elements, digital teaching and cross-site interaction and engagement. As such, the seminar strongly depends on your engagement and active participation. Please only commit you in case you are willing and have the capacity to contribute to the seminar´s outputs.

Please note: since the seminar takes place in cooperation with other universities, single sessions might be also conducted after the semester ending in Mainz. Further information will be provided before the seminar starts.

Digital teaching:
Single sessions take place as joint, interactive conferences in a digital setting to which we occasionally also invite the experts for direct contact. Working groups involve cross-site groups between students from all universities as well as Mainz-specific groups. Single sessions will be largely based on synchronous online teaching involving either the local Mainz-group or all participating students and supervisors. As such, you should be able to attend the sessions (Monday, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.)
