The lecture provides in-depth basic knowledge for an important epoch in Protestant church history and is therefore suitable for both beginners and exams; it will also introduce important research controversies.
The lecture should not be a "one-way street". Slides will accompany the lecture (structure, texts, discussion questions). Your questions and contributions to the discussion are very welcome!
Contents:
The lecture focuses on the church history of the long 19th century from the French Revolution to the First World War, a time that has shaped our present.
Political overview: French Revolution, the political consequences of the revolution in the German Empire.
- Schleiermacher, church unions, revival movement.
- Industrialization, "soziale Frage" and the churches.
- The Catholic Church after 1789: Romanticism, Restoration, Papal History (Ultramontanism).
Political overview: From "Vormärz" (pre-revolutionary time) to the First World War
- Cultural Protestantism. Protestant theology in the 19th century.
- Evangelical Alliance (Evangelical movement), "Gemeinschaftsbewegung" (community movement), Pentecostal movement.
- The Catholic Church after 1848: Association and Social Catholicism, fight against "modernism", the so called "Kulturkampf" (culture struggle).
- The First World War as an epoch break. The churches in the First World War

This lecture provides an overview of church history for the intermediate examination, diploma examination and church exams in our courses of studies (Mag. Theol., B.Ed / M.Ed. etc.).
Audience: all theology students and students from all faculties. Exam candidates for repeating their studies.
Forms of work: Lecture, discussion about central sources of Church History.
A precondition for active participation in this course is the successful participation in two short simple tests (max. 15 minutes) on Monday, May 25 at 2:15 p.m. (in the room of the lecture) and on Thursday, July 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the room of the lecture.
