In this seminar, we approach Spanish-language film production through the concept of intersectionality. With its "reality effect" (Walter Benjamin), film allows us to experience new stories in a very personal way, but also to observe how social discourses are expressed therein. Film has sophisticated means of expression that make it a "plastic art in motion" and arouse our sensory interest even unconsciously. Furthermore, film production contributes to the consolidation of social discourses that must be accepted as valid and at the same time is able to give voice to subaltern discourses, i.e. those that are often presented as unimportant or invalid in society.
Intersectionality will be introduced as a useful conceptual and analytical tool for analysing contemporary Spanish-language film production, as it allows us to show how stereotypes and common social discourses of exclusion are confirmed or challenged. Thus, this seminar unfolds its interest on three levels: firstly, it is a glance at Spanish-speaking societies through their artistic creation; secondly, it applies intersectionality on a theoretical level as a tool for analysing inequalities anchored in the social; and finally, it uses audiovisual language knowledge to unravel the ways in which the discourses that sustain inequality are cemented or challenged through the stories narrated in audio-visual form.
