The language of this seminar (oral and written) is English only. Exchange students are welcome if they are enrolled in a master’s program at their home university
In this seminar, we will read short stories and excerpts from novels, featuring a translator or interpreter as one of the main protagonists. We will look at the representation of interpreters and translators and analyze which aspects of the transfer of linguistic and cultural knowledge are illustrated in the fictional texts. What role does the bridging of languages and cultures play? How are the interpreters and translators presented? As facilitators, traitors, passive mouthpieces, mythic figures? Which role do gender, class and race and power differences play? How is their profession, their skills and knowledge treated? What makes translators and interpreters ideal protagonists of literary works and why is it likely that more and more such figures will appear in literature?
Your work assignments in this class include:
o reading the texts (short stories, poems, excerpts, critical texts) provided as pdf files on ILIAS
o participation in classroom discussions
o preparing a Power Point presentation on “your” topic to be held alone or in a small group during one class session
o a written paper on your individual topic to be submitted, at the latest, on August 22, 2022.This class will be taught on campus, unless the pandemic situation dictates otherwise.
