In June 1948, the SS Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury in England, carrying with it the first of a series of waves of young immigrants from the Caribbean. This course traces the effects which this historic moment and its after-effects has had on Britain in the half-century or so that has followed. Through the poetry, fiction, journalism and essays of commentators including Sam Selvon, Grace Nichols and George Lamming, we will explore the hostility which these Caribbeans faced as they sought work and integration in the ‘mother country’. We will also address issues of identity, racism, education, leisure and entertainment within the complex and fraught environment of post-colonial Britain and the resonance of the Windrush for British culture today.
