Requirements / organisational issues:

  • Subtitle Workshop / EZTitles: At the beginning of the semester, we will work with the subtitling program Subtitle Workshop, which is freely available on the Internet. During the course of the semester, the much more complex professional subtitling program EZTitles will be introduced.

To work with the software, you may use the computers provided in the CAFL computer labs on which Subtitle Workshop is installed, or you may download the software to your laptop/computer.

Please note: Like almost all subtitling programs, the above softwares work only on Windows computers (not Apple MacBooks or Apple iMacs). Students with an Apple device can use the subtitling program Aegisub, but they would need to learn how it works on their own.

  • Moodle: We will use the LMS Moodle platform to deliver the media and submit the captions. More information on this will be discussed in the first session.

  • To pass the course, active and regular participation as well as regular submission and presentation of prepared subtitles is required.
If a grade is required, the last three captioning performances will be graded according to the criteria previously discussed in class. Further information on this will be discussed in the first sessions.

  • Erasmus students and listening students (Hörer) are generally welcome. However, if the course becomes too large, the instructor reserves the right not to admit Erasmus students and listening students in order to concentrate on the regular students.

  • Language of instruction: German

Contents:
Subtitling requires technical but also translation expertise. The complexity of audiovisual media requires a specific approach to the text.

In the course we will discuss general technical-formal basics as well as create subtitles. Subtitles are usually made after class time and discussed in class.

The audiovisual source materials are short videos in German that are subtitled in German. Such monolingual subtitles are usually needed for individuals with hearing impairments who use the subtitles to understand the spoken content of a video.

In addition to the successful creation of monolingual subtitles in German for German-language videos of different length and thematic focus, the course is devoted to basic practical as well as theoretical topics:

  • Downloading and successfully installing the Subtitle Workshop software
  • Getting to know the basic functions of the software
  • Subtitling basics: What is audiovisual translation? What is subtitling? What are the different types of subtitling?
  • Basics of monolingual subtitling: Since when does monolingual subtitling exist? Why are monolingual subtitles needed? What should I pay special attention to when creating monolingual subtitles?
  • Strategies, hints and guidelines
  • Subtitling music and sounds
  • Live subtitling
  • Monolingual subtitling for children

As mentioned above, we will use the free subtitling software Subtitle Workshop in the beginning, as it is much easier to handle for the beginning. In the course of the semester, the much more complex professional subtitling program EZTitles will be introduced.
