The in-person phase of this class will be during this semester's project week from 16 to 20 May 2022.
There will be a preliminary meeting on 20 April at 2:40 p.m. for anyone who is interested in the class and/or has questions.
Contents:
Initial accommodation facilities for asylum seekers ("Erstaufnahmeeinrichtungen") provide housing for people who have usually only been in Germany for a very short time. The different organizations on site (e.g. immigration office, social counseling, child care) use monolingual and multilingual material for their communication (e.g. posters, information letters, flyers, forms).
After some preparatory reading, the project week (16-20 May 2022) will start with an overview of qualitative research methods, with a focus on document analysis. Students will receive a practical introduction into working with MAXQDA, especially in the areas of thematic analysis, anonymization, and visualization methods. They will then work on examining different documents (e.g. notices, flyers, information letters, forms) that are used in initial accommodation facilities. The aim is to gain an insight into the translation logics and translation policies of the various organizations through the analysis of the documents.
On the last day of the event, students will present their results to the project group.
