In this seminar, we will discuss the relationship between commensurability and translatability. To that end, we will read relevant texts from various (academic and non-academic) discourses. Central questions include: is (cultural or lexical) commensurability a condition of translatability? Does translation itself foster or impede commensurability? What are the ethical questions raised by (cultural) comparisons and by the very idea of translatability?
