Contents:
The lecture course will deal with the role of ethnicity in American culture. It will discuss the various controversies over the hyphenated American versus the "straight" American, multiculturalism and identity politics. We will trace historical developments of the idea of ethnic identity and American nationhood, the tension between exclusion and inclusion, the claim that America has moved "beyond" ethnicity to "we are all ethnics now".
