The introduction to the art of the Middle Ages serves to acquire basic knowledge about art and architecture from the 8th to the 15th century. The focus is on the development of visual and formal languages in book, wall and panel painting as well as architecture and sculpture. In the seminar, important artists of the time are discussed, including Giotto, Filippo Brunelleschi, Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. Overall, the focus is on important art centers in Europe (including Florence, Bruges, Cologne) where a lively exchange of knowledge and techniques, material and image programs took place. Descriptions and analyzes are practiced on selected picture and building examples, and the origin, style and picture themes are also learned.
