The Black Sea is a historical area at the border between Europe and Asia that has recently been increasingly noticed again. As "Pontos Euxeinos" it was and is a source of wealth for traders, seafarers or fishermen, as "Pontos Axeinos" it was a transhipment point for slaves and not least the starting point of one of the most devastating pandemics, the plague.
In this lecture, the history of the Black Sea will be told from objects, a large part of which is contained in Mainz museums and libraries, some of which have come here quite astonishingly.
In this way, the lecture follows the now famous concept of the "History of the World in 100 Objects" by Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum in London, who places not handed-down texts but handed-down objects in the foreground of his narrative for his history of the world.
