The seminar is held together with Prof. Dr. Markus Wriedt (Goethe University Frankfurt) and Dr. Benedikt Brunner (IEG Mainz). The seminar is adressed at theology students in their main studies (teaching and parish) with a special interest in source reading on contemporary church history (1968-1989).
The seminar is divided in three parts (1. 1945-1949, 2. 1949-1968, 3. 1968-1989). This third section can also be taken without attending the first two seminars.
Forms of work:
The seminar will take the form of five study days of 6 hours each (Fridays, 1-7 p.m.). The dates are Oct. 22, Dec. 3, Jan. 14, Jan. 28, Feb. 1.
Contents:
The intention of the three-part seminar (1945-1990) is to compile and publish a collection of basic source texts on the history of Protestantism in Germany since 1945.
In addition to introductory research contributions sources for selection, analysis and discussion will be provided. The participating students take an active part in the selection, editing and commenting of the sources. The work takes place to a large extent in smaller working groups.
After the work has been completed, the result is to be published in hybrid, digital and book form.
The third part of the source seminar is dedicated to the churches in the age of social reform. In detail, the following topics are to be dealt with using sources:
- 1968 and the democratization in the churches
- The women's rights movement, the dispute over § 218 (BGB) and the churches
- The role of the churches in the peace movement
- The role of the churches in the ecological movement
- Interchurch and ecumenical cooperation
- Internal Church Developments
- The development of the churches in the GDR
- The role of the churches in the 1989 revolution and the process of church reunification
