Against the background of current migration to Germany (and many other countries), state authorities are increasingly confronted with communication problems: How can understanding take place if the participants do not have a common language? One obvious and tested solution is (specialised) interpreters.
In this course, theoretical and practical knowledge is acquired which enables students to act professionally as interpreters in communal settings. To this end, students work on an understanding of institutional structures of German municipal bodies: How is a municipality organised? What is bureaucracy? How is interpreting organised in a municipality? Who interprets for whom? In which settings? What effects do the structures have on the interpreters and the interpreters' actions?
Together with representatives of the Kommunales Integrationszentrum Oberbergischer Kreis (KI), structures and typical organisational procedures will be examined. Together with the students, individual settings will be contextualised and prepared in the form of framework scenarios. Students will have the opportunity to work independently with representatives of the KI during the rehearsal phase. At the end of the week, the topics of the week will be further reflected on in moderated plenary discussions in order to look for possibilities of action for future interpreting practice.
