In this seminar, we will first discuss the concept of Area Studies and recent attempts to revitalize the field. Taking the Indian Ocean as an example for a relational approach to areas, we will then explore this maritime region by focusing on different expressions of this relational space. The students will be asked to prepare presentations on topics of their interest which should allow the group to interactively engage with the Indian Ocean. A particular emphasis will be put on different media and aesthetic formations (film, music, literature,...).
A list of seminal readings and potential themes will be provided to assist in the selection of topics.
