The concept of translation has gained in importance in recent years, as it offers a theoretical framework not only for literary translation, but also for cultural transfers, which, unlike transfer or mediation, does not privilege one culture over another from the outset. On the contrary, translation always involves an in-depth study of the culture that is to be translated.
In the seminar, we do not want to deal with entire cultures, but with the translation performance of various early modern media, such as a motif on a painting into a sculpture or vice versa. The translation of a painting or sculpture into language will also be of importance. The question to be asked here is whether the potentials of individual media become particularly clear in this type of translation and what changes occur in the translation process. Of particular interest is also the translation performance of printmaking. This work on a specific case study will then be placed in the context of early modern translation practice.
