Digitisation is not only a topic of general social relevance. It also affects translation studies and teaching in a fundamental way. The increasing automation of translational processes raises many, mostly unsettling questions about the future and professional prospects of human translation practice.
In this seminar, we take a step back and ask what digitisation means from a translation studies perspective. In doing so, we avoid reducing the topic to the aspect of automation of translational work and its consequences for professional practice. On the basis of basic cultural and social science literature, we critically ask:
- What does 'digitisation' actually mean? How can it be understood scientifically?
- How is digitisation treated in translation studies? What are the central themes and questions?
- In what way is translation as a communicative practice related to digitisation processes? Which manifestations of digitisation affect translation and how?
- What notions of translation are inscribed in digital technologies? Which language ideologies are "embedded" in translation machines, for example?
Prerequisite for passing the seminar is regular participation, an oral presentation and a written seminar paper.
