The purpose of this course is to introduce the history of Jewish and Christian interpretation of the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament. Using examples from the Torah / Pentateuch, we will explore the diversity of exegetical approaches and interpretive literature in Jewish and Christian traditions. The focus will be on how pre-modern interpreters have read, retold and rewritten the biblical text, and what this implies about their understandings of the nature of biblical literature itself.
Lectures will be held in English, but discussions will be held in English and German, and students are welcome to speak and write in either language.
