Ambivalence is a defining element of numerous ancient figures. It can affect, among other things, the physical and mental state (e.g. wisdom/infirmity of age), behavior (e.g. decisiveness/overhastiness), life achievements (e.g. individual successes/failures) or even the composition of a figure from different, e.g. character facets. Ambivalences inherent in a character have an effect on (the narrative of) their own existence as well as on the lives of those with whom they are linked in some way - e.g. interactively or as a reference figure. Especially in the case of reference figures, contradictory attributions create tension through their contradictory nature and thus generate fascination; they serve as a projection surface for needs and desires, but also for disappointment, dismay or ridicule.
The lecture series will use selected examples to present figures from different cultural areas whose defining characteristic is their ambivalent appearance. These include literary figures such as gods and heroes or mythical beings and their pictorial representations. The special conception of ambivalent appearances, the function of the character traits and the range of possible figure formations will be the subject of an interdisciplinary approach to the topic.
