The lecture offers an introduction to the sociology of the body. Its starting point is the assumption of the double embodiment of society: social structures, processes and discourses are inscribed in the body, shape it and characterize how bodies are viewed and treated. In addition, social reality is also produced and physically experienced in bodily practices. In this respect, the sociology of the body studies the human body as a social object.

The lecture provides an overview of central questions, theoretical approaches, problem areas and research methods in the sociology of the body. We start with traces of the body in sociological classics and reflect on the role of the sociology of the body between a "hyphenated sociology" and general sociology. We will become familiar with various theoretical approaches to the body and follow trends and developments in the sociological analysis of the body using historical and current examples, such as body images, body norms and body design. Finally, we look at the body with a view to empirical research: as its object, but also as its subject and instrument.

Credit points can be earned through successful participation in the final exam.

Pleade note that the lecture will be given in German.
