Requirements / organisational issues: The lecture starts in the 2nd week of the term at 8.30.
Contents: The lecture addresses the cognitive foundations of language by dealing with recent approaches that try to explain language structure, diachronic change and language acquisition in terms of conceptualization. Starting from the assumption that language and cognition mutually influence one another, we will investigate how human categorization is mirrored in language structure and use. This implies taking a closer look at one of the central tenets of cognitive linguistics, i.e. the question of whether storage and retrieval of linguistic items is significantly different from that of other non-linguistic knowledge and whether the use of language in understanding draws on cognitive abilities similar to those employed in non-linguistic tasks.
