This course will tackle the ambiguous status of nationalism in Ireland throughout the twentieth and into the twenty-first century. We shall engage with a variety of cultural products (e.g. literary fiction, speeches, legal texts, newspaper reportage, songs and performances) purporting various types of nationalisms which have coexisted in Ireland. Ideological relations between certain varieties of nationalisms and other movements and issues such as socialism, feminism, masculinity, and the postcolonial will become apparent.
