Requirements / organisational issues:
All students are required to take three thirty-minute exams with a word count of 250-350 words each. An average grade of 4,0 or above must be achieved in over two of these tests. This is to ensure active participation. 

B.A. Students may also choose to take a modular exam in this course or in translation. This exam will involve writing an essay of 1000-1250 words in 90 minutes.

Compulsory attendance:
Compulsory attendance is mandatory for this course.

Contents:
This course is designed to take you through the mechanics of academic writing. By the end of the course you should be able to structure and format an essay, create an effective thesis statement  and write in an appropriately academic style. Above all else, you will be encouraged to see writing as a process. 

The course will focus on the following areas:

-          Academic register

-          Generating ideas

-          Planning

-          Thesis statements and research questions

-          Structuring your paper

-          Topic sentences, arguments and logic

-          Introductions and conclusions

-          Paragraphs and transitions

-          Formatting systems: MLA

-          Use and synthesis of source material

-          Drafting and editing your paper
